LKBEN11502: How to find the current user from a cmd or powershell

Symptom

You need to find out the actual user logged on

Cause

Needed because the UserName is not always shown properly on Windows

Solution

To find the logged on username from a cmd you use:

echo %username%

If this is not a local account, you still need to find the domain. This can be done with:

echo %userdomain%

To find this information with powershell, we need different commands:

Write-Host $(whoami)

To find just the username or just the domain:

Write-Host $env:UserName

or

$env:UserName

and

Write-Host $env:UserDomain

or

$env:UserDomain
