Solution

on a debian linux with a self compiled installation of nagios - not the installation from debian software repository!! - the following path is necessary to verify the configuration files.

  1. login
  2. cd /usr/local/nagios/bin
  3. ./nagios <options> <main_config_file>
Type ./nagios to get more information.
