LKBEN11497: What does out of band means?

Symptom

You have some IPMI mainboard and the management network card uses out of band networking (OOB)

Cause

This is a kind of definition

Solution

If your have some communication and use the "normal datastream", this is called your "band". If you use "out of band" communictiona it uses another frequency band.

If you have some mangement board inside your computer, most of the time it has some own network card or serial port, an out of band communication uses a completely different network. Most of the time a different switch used for a management network. (or at least it uses some trust boundaries for accessing the IPMI (=management) interface)

"Out of band" means you provide a separate channel of communication for accessing and controlling your server infrastructure, so even if your main network is down, you still can do some management in the production network.
