LKBEN10973: Howto find the best sources.list for your debian server

Symptom

Your installation or update does not use the full bandwidth and is slow

Cause

Your mirror servers in /etc/apt/sources.list are not configured optimally

Solution

You can use the following command to install netselect and netselect-apt

apt-get install netselect

apt-get install netselect-apt

Now you run netselect-apt with the version of debian you want to install. e.g.

netselect-apt stable

This will generate a sources.list file in the current directory which is optimal for your location on the internet. You can have a look at it and move it to /etc/apt to use this configuration.
