LKBEN10963: Howto configure a BIND DNS server for internal name resolution with a domain registered internally and externally.

Symptom

You cannot query an internal server because the domain is used externally to.

Cause

This happens when you use the same DNS domain name internal and external.

Solution

With bind you can add a new zone which is configured to forward only. The record it points to should be internal. Please note that you cannot query the external ISP DNS server anymore with this configuration! For a zone which is registered internal and externally this is by design.

zone "lubby.org" {

    type forward;

    forward only;

    forwarders { <your internal DNS server here>; };

};
