LKBEN10784: Howto backup a sql server database and restore it again


Symptom

You need to backup a MS SQL database to disk and restore it again

Cause

It is always a good idea to backup your data!

Solution

The following command can be used to easily backup a database:

BACKUP DATABASE mydatabase
TO DISK = 'c:\temp\mydatabase.bak'

You can restore your backup from your file mydatabase.bak with the following command:

RESTORE DATABASE [A very long DB name.MDF]
FROM disk = 'c:\temp\mydatabase.bak'
with replace


This will restore your database. Please note that you might have problems with the users defined in the database when the

restore is done on a different server system. You need to recreate the logins for the users!
