LLE10071 : Howto clear the bash history

Symptom:

You need to clear the history of your bash shell

Cause:

You can do this for security reasons

Solution:

You can type the following command to clear your bash history:

>~/.bash_history

Please note the > sign which is not the prompt but the pipe into! It means you pipe nothing into your home drive followed by the file .bash_history. The same command, if your home drive is /home/lubby, can be written like:

>/home/lubby/.bash_history

You can also use this technique to reset log files

>/var/log/logile

This will keep all the permissions on logfile and will empty it.

You can also link ~/.bash_history to /dev/null by the following command:

ln -sf ~/.bash_history /dev/null
