LKBEN10580: Howto deactivate shutdown - cause dialogue in Windows Server 2003 ("event tracker")

Symptom

Every time Windows Server 2003 is shutdown or rebootet, an annoying dialogue pops up asking for the reason

Cause

Works as designed

Solution

This feature of Windows Server 2003 is planned for documenting every shutdown in the system eventlog. While this is a desired feature with a productive server (database, file, print....), it's very annoying with a testsystem or a server administrated by few credible administrators.

The built-in feature can be deactivated in the Local Computer Policy (type "gpedit.msc" in "run..." or Command Shell) under

-> Computer Configuration
-> Administrative Templates
-> System
-> Double-Click “Display Shutdown Event Tracker” and select Disabled
-> OK

If it's to be activated again, follow above procedure.
