VPN stands for Virtual Private Network.
A virtual private network (VPN) is a private network that makes use of a public network (such as the Internet), while maintaining security and privacy through encryption and security procedures. The Link Layer protocols of the virtual network are said to be tunneled through the transport network. Many businesses are using VPN on their servers to allow their employees to connect to their server from home.
From the security standpoint, VPNs either trust the underlying delivery network, or must enforce security with mechanisms in the VPN itself. The authentication mechanism may require explicit user action, or may be embedded in the VPN client or the workstation.
