LKBEN11058: Howto convert a pdf document to a text file so it can be viewed via ssh or telnet


Symptom

You need to look at a pdf document via command line utilities or want to index or search in it.

Solution

To convert a pdf document you can use the pdftotext utility. It is contained in the poppler-utils on a debian like system. (debian, ubuntu, kubuntu, ...)

e.g.

To convert the 'svn-book.pdf' to txt you only need to do the following:

pdftotext /tmp/svn-book.pdf /tmp/output.txt
