Solution
Server message protocol is an application layer network protocol used to provide shared access to files, printers, serial ports, etc. It is used by Microsoft (Microsoft LAN Manager), IBM (LAN Server) and Samba & Samba-TNG.
SMB was modified 1996 by Microsoft and called CIFS (Common Internet File System). CIFS was build on NetBIOS over TCP/IP (also called NBT) and not only features file and printer shared access but also Windows-RPC and Windows NT-Domain service.
SMB 2.0 was introduced in 2006 by Microsoft in Windows Vista.
SMB 2.0 was streamlined (the number of commands was reduced to 19 from over 100) and introduces pipelining (sending additional requests before the response arrives), adds support for multiple actions in a single request and supports larger buffer sizes.
